Root, Buttler tons in vain as hosts fail in record World Cup chase

Pakistan beat England by 14 runs at Trent Bridge on Monday as the World Cup's first centuries from Joe Root and Jos Buttler were not enough to help the hosts and pre-tournament favourites overhaul the huge target of 349 set for them.
England had won the toss and put Pakistan in to bat, banking on the pace of fast bowlers Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer for early wickets and no doubt hoping to recreate the way the West Indies skittled Pakistan out for 105 on Friday.
Instead, the visitors put that woeful performance behind them and racked up 348 runs for eight wickets, delighting their cheering fans in the stands with 29 fours and six sixes.
Mohammad Hafeez was his side's top scorer with 84 off 62 balls, while Babar Azam made 63 and captain Sarfaraz Ahmed belted a quickfire 55.
"Everyone was believing we could do this. We were playing good cricket but not winning crucial stages of the game. Everyone chipped in today and gave everything which was required to win the game," Hafeez told the BBC.
"It was a total team effort. It is a very happy dressing room."
Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq delighted their vocal supporters by belting a string of boundaries off Archer and Woakes in an opening partnership of 82.
England spinner Moeen Ali finally broke up the pair, getting Fakhar stumped on 36 on his way to a three-wicket haul, while Woakes grabbed three more and also took four catches on a day when England were otherwise uncharacteristically ragged in the field.
Babar and Mohammad Hafeez steadied the ship for Pakistan with a partnership of 88 runs as the visitors set England a larger score than any side had ever chased down in the history of the competition. The best successful World Cup run chase to date came in 2011 when Ireland made 329 against England.
In reply, England steadily lost the wickets of their top-order batsmen Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes to leave the side on 118 for four and give Root and Buttler a mountain to climb.
The two did their best, each eventually reaching three figures. Root hit 10 fours and one six on his way to 107 before scooping an easy catch off Khan to Hafeez at third man.
Buttler smashed a four to notch up his own hundred a few overs later, only to fall to the very next ball.
As the balls-remaining count dwindled, Moeen and Woakes swung valiantly at everything they could. But after they were both caught out in successive balls, Mark Wood and Adil Rashid were left stranded at the crease as the target slipped beyond their reach.

Lightning-fast iOS 13, powerful Mac Pro

Apple unveils lightning-fast iOS 13, powerful Mac Pro

iOS 13 comes with much-anticipated 'Dark Mode', advanced photo and camera features.

In a fresh attempt to make its devices faster and agile like never before, the Cupertino-based iPhone maker has unveiled iOS 13 with features like Dark Mode and Apple sign-in, a sturdy Mac Pro desktop for creative professionals and a brand new iPadOS among several features that would bring personalised experiences to its millions of users.

The powerful iOS 13 unlocks the Apple device with Face ID 30 per cent faster, reduces app download sizes by up to 50 per cent, makes app updates over 60 per cent smaller and results in apps launching up to twice as fast.

"Last year, we delivered iOS 12 which is full of features from dynamic new AR experiences to amazing screen time and faster performance. iOS 12 has the highest customer satisfaction -- an incredible 97 per cent -- in the industry. Nearly 85 per cent of iOS customers are on the latest release," Apple CEO Tim Cook told a packed house at the San Jose convention centre here on Monday during the company's annual flagship developers' conference "WWDC 2019".

"In fact, iOS 12 has been installed on more systems than any version of iOS ever. That is in stark contrast to the latest offerings from those other guys like Android 9 which was released before iOS. Well, it saw only 10 per cent adoption," Cook told more than 5,000 coders and developers from 86 countries.

iOS 13 comes with much-anticipated "Dark Mode", advanced photo and camera features, the "Sign In with Apple" tool and an all-new Apple Maps experience.

Dark Mode is a new dark colour scheme that works across native apps to deliver a great viewing experience especially in low-light conditions.

Dark Mode is available to third-party app developers for integration into their own apps and can be scheduled to turn on automatically at sunset or at a certain time.

In iOS 13, most photo editing tools are now available for video editing, making it possible to rotate, crop or apply filters right within the Photos app.

"We're excited for customers to experience what's coming to iPhone this fall and can't wait for them to see how great everything looks in Dark Mode," said Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering.

"Sign In with Apple" makes it easy for users to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID and has two-factor authentication built in for an added layer of security.

Apple also announced to deliver a new Maps experience with broader road coverage, better pedestrian data, more precise addresses and more detailed landcover.

The new map is available now in select cities and states, and will roll out across the US by the end of 2019 and to more countries in 2020, announced the company.

New iOS 13 features will be available this fall as a free software update.

Ending a six-year drought for creative professionals, Apple introduced the all-new Mac Pro and unveiled Apple "Pro Display XDR", touted as the world's best pro display.

The Mac Pro can run three streams of 8K video and 12 streams of 4K video in real time, virtually eliminating proxy workflows.

It features workstation-class Xeon processors up to 28 cores, a high-performance memory system with a massive 1.5 TB capacity, eight PCIe expansion slots and a graphics architecture featuring the world's most powerful graphics card.

Pro Display XDR features a massive 32-inch Retina 6K display, an extreme 1,600 nits of peak brightness, an incredible 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a super-wide viewing angle.

"Pro Display XDR is the world's best pro display and the perfect companion to the all-new Mac Pro," said Phil Schiller, Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing.

The new Mac Pro that supports up to six displays for a breathtaking 120 million pixels would be available in the fall.

Giving iPad users new capabilities and intuitive features, Apple also introduced a brand new iPadOS that is built on the same foundation as its iOS.

With iPadOS, users would be able to work with apps in multiple windows, see more information on a redesigned Home screen and more natural ways to use Apple Pencil.

iPadOS with Dark Mode feature will be available this fall as a free software update for iPad Air 2 and later, all iPad Pro models, iPad 5th generation and iPad mini 4.

The company also previewed watchOS 6, which empowers Apple Watch users to better manage their health and fitness, and gives access to dynamic new watch faces and the App Store directly on Apple Watch.

Giving its content streaming dreams new wings, Apple also previewed tvOS 13, the operating system that makes Apple TV 4K a personalised entertainment device for enjoying TV shows, movies, music, photos, games and apps.

The company also previewed macOS "Catalina" which is replacing iTunes with its popular entertainment apps -- Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and the Apple TV app.

Panellists talk during the sixth session of the Sharjah Ramadan Majlis at Al Majaz Amphitheatre.

This 'habit' has got to stop, medical experts and health officials said at the sixth session of the Sharjah Ramadan Majlis at Al Majaz Amphitheatre.

Today, when one starts feeling unwell, it has become a habit to do a Google search about the symptoms. And the result? Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of links to websites and articles - all trying to explain possible illnesses.
This 'habit' has got to stop, medical experts and health officials said at the sixth session of the Sharjah Ramadan Majlis at Al Majaz Amphitheatre.
Popular physician and social media personality Dr Ahmed Abdelmalek from Kuwait stressed that "nothing can replace the examination and diagnosis by a real, qualified and trained doctor".
"A qualified and trained physician takes a number of factors into account while examining and treating a patient, something that online experts and unknown sources could not," he said, emphasising that all information and advice found online and in other media platforms must be verified first.
Presided over by Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, chairman of the Sharjah Media Council, the sixth session of Sharjah Ramadan Majlis was hosted by the Sharjah Press Club (SPC) of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB) and moderated by Dr Abdelsalam Alhammadi.
Dr Abdel Nasser bin Salem, adviser at the Ministry of Health and Prevention, said the UAE has a zero-tolerance policy against the unauthorised medical practice of self-styled 'experts'.
"Those who are still dispensing medical advice and treatment are violating the UAE laws," he warned.   He also called for a regulatory mechanism that would deal with unauthorised sources of medical advice, information and advertisements offering quick solutions.
Dr Muawia Al Elaiwi, a paediatrician based in Saudi Arabia, pointed out that although medical misconceptions and rumours are largely spread via the Internet, the trend is not new.
"It dates back to hundreds of years ago and even Ibn Khaldun, the legendary Muslim philosopher, social scientist and historian, talked about the problem," he said.
Dr Al Elaiwi said many of the misconceptions about health are rooted in ancient civilisations, such as India and China.  He attributed the problem to an absence of public awareness about health and called for effective steps to promote it.
"Health awareness is the first line of defence against disease," Dr Al Elaiwi said. And in driving awareness, Dr Salem said medical groups and the media could play a crucial role.

Google server trouble snarls YouTube, Snapchat

Google server trouble snarls YouTube, Snapchat

Snapchat and Google-owned YouTube both acknowledged the server issue on their Twitter accounts.

Congested Google servers in the eastern United States caused problems for users of Snapchat and YouTube on Sunday, with complaints on social media that the popular apps weren't accessible.

Google acknowledged the issue, writing in a statement on its Cloud Platform status page that it was dealing with "high levels of network congestion in the eastern USA, affecting multiple services in Google Cloud, G Suite and YouTube."

"Users may see slow performance or intermittent errors," it said, adding that engineers had completed the first of two steps to restore normal operations.

Earlier in the day, social media users complained of trouble loading a slew of popular websites and apps.

"Google, YouTube, Snapchat, Shopify, all currently down. Is the internet melting?" asked one Twitter post.

Snapchat and Google-owned YouTube both acknowledged the server issue on their Twitter accounts.

Cloud computing is one of Google's most lucrative services, but faces stiff competition from other technology companies like Amazon and Microsoft.

In March, the world's largest social network, Facebook, blamed a "server configuration change" for a massive outage affecting its applications around the world.

The outage affected users for at least 12 hours in most areas of the world, with the biggest impact in North America and Europe, a tracking website said at the time.
